In 1883, a graceful acknowledgement, thanking his correspondent for dedicating a philosophical poem to him -- 'My poor little dance macabre , for which you show so much indulgence, does not merit so much honour'; 1903, a masterful put-down -- 'Thank you for your verses, but I cannot see what music could add to them'. The remaining letters include a letter of thanks to M. Loewy, director of the Paris Observatory and an undated letter promising to visit and 'listen to your Dalila before going to the Français'; a letter in English of 1879 acknowledges receipt of 'The complete music, score and bound parts', with thanks for having 'taken such an interest in my affair'.
