An atmospheric setting of a lyric by Catulle Mendès, evoking the poet in a dream-forest caught between the weak light of the moon and the 'frèle image' of the lost loved one. The dedicatee of the song, Mme Marie Barbier, was the wife of the librettist for Saint-Saëns's projected work Le Timbre d'Argent .
