(7 3/8 x 8 7/8 in.), backed, browned, edges worn, a few tiny losses (one catching one letter) . THE CONTROVERSIAL PULASKI GIVES DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS THREE DAYS BEFORE THE BATTLE OF GERMANTOWN Pulaski reorganizes his cavalry: "[Ag]greable to his excellenci's [ sic ] order, you would detach fiftyne [ sic ] good horse[s], very early in the morning, to attend general [James] Reed and [General John] Cadwalader upon special business. [T]hey will find general Reed at his quarters a mile or two to the right of Conners house...Major Gimpson will select, so many Light horses as he can, to be ready to march with him tomorrow [at] twelve of clock. [T]o the James Town, all your regiment, shall rejoin at my quarter...after [the] Regimen[t]s of my brigade..." Pulaski, a Polish patriot, was forced to flee Poland in 1772 when the First Partition of Poland occurred. By late 1775 he was in Paris, where he met Benjamin Franklin who recommended Pulaski to General Washington. Pulaski served as Washington's Aide de Camp until the fall of 1777 when he was made "Commander of the Horse," and commanded the four regiments of dragoons in the Continental Army. His service during the Revolutionary War was rife with controversy, but his gallant death at Savannah on 9 October 1779 redeemed him in the eyes of most of his superiors and subordinates (Boatner, pp. 900-901).
