Title: Report of the Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, Showing the Progress of the Survey During the Year 1867 Author: U.S. Coast Survey Place: Washington Publisher: Government Printing Office Date: 1869 Description: xii, 334 pp. + 26 (of 27) folding charts & other plates. (4to) 28.5x21.5 cm (11¼x8¼"), original cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Important volume of the Coast Survey, covering surveys the year of the Alaska purchase by the United States, and containing, as Appendix No. 18 (pp.187-329), "Report of Assistant George Davidson Relative to the Resources and the Coast Features of Alaska Territory," forming what may be considered the first Alaska Coast Pilot issued by the Survey. Pp. 226-264 of this appendix are titled "Directory of the Coast of Alaska." Four of the charts relate to Alaska: Alaska; Sitka Harbor; St. Paul, Kadiak Island; and Illiouliouk and Captain's Harbors, Unalaska Island. Other west coast related charts are Point Sal Anchorage, California; Tillamook Bay, Oregon; Puget Sound; and Shilshole Bay, Washington Territory. Provenance: PBA 1/25/07 George Davidson's Report was published a year earlier in Russian America Message from the President of the United States, House of Representatives 40th Congress 2nd session Ex.Doc. No. 177, 1868. This did not include the list of geographical positions. Lot Amendments Condition: Some fading, staining and extremity wear to covers; charts with a little toning and occasional fox spots, lacks plate 3, "Coast Chart No. 8 - from Wells to St. Anne", there was no plate No. 19; else very good.
