QI BAISHI (1863-1957) Lychees and Bees Scroll, mounted and framed, ink and colour on paper 57x 37 cm. (22½ x 14½ in.) Inscribed and signed, with two seals of the artist Dated eighty-second year of the artist Dedicated to Shao Huai (Lou Shibai born 1918, student of Qi Baishi Note: This painting of Lychees and Bees is full of rustic atmosphere, reflecting Qi Baishi's sincere feelings about nature. In the inscription, 'Shaohuai' refers to Lou Shibai who was Qi Baishi's student. Lou's family came from the Liuyang region in Hunan province, was born in Beijing in 1918. He began to learn from Qi Baishi when he was fourteen years old and formally became Qi's apprentice at the age of sixteen. He studied painting, calligraphy, seal cutting and poetry writing for 25 years. Lou Shibai was the last apprentice of Qi Baishi The teacher Qi and the student Lou had great affection for each other, and so Qi changed a character of Lou's artistic name in 1937. Lou graduated from the Art Department at Fu-Jen University in Beijing in 1942. He comprehensively inherited and carried forward the traditions of Qi Baishi's paintings, and his works fully highlighted Qi Baishi's distinctive style.
