PINDER, Ulrich (d.1510 or 1519). Epiphanie medicorum. Speculum videndi urinas hominum. Clavis aperiendi portas plusuum. Berillus discernendi causas & differentias febrium. [Nuremberg: Sodalitas Celtica, 1506]. 4 o (215 x 152 mm). Collation: s2 A-Z 6 a-k 6 l-m 4 (m4 blank). 207 leaves (of 208, without the blank). Woodcut illustrations in text, one full-page woodcut of a uroscopic consultation surrounded by a border of urine glasses. (Title and last two leaves with marginal repairs, .2 bound after A1.) Contemporary blindstamped quarter pigskin over wooden boards (spine ends repaired, clasps lacking); modern cloth folding case. Provenance : G.F.K. 1595 (ownership inscription on pastedown); D. Harles Erlangen 95 (ownership inscription on title); early marginalia throughout; Surgeon General's Library (bookplate on pastedown, ink library and withdrawal stamps on title and first page of register). RARE FIRST EDITION. Pinder was born in Nrdlingen where he practiced as a doctor of medicine from 1484-89. 1489-93 he was physician to the Elector Frederick of Saxony, and in 1493 he was appointed physician to the City of Nuremberg. Pinder was one of the first medical writers to have his own printing press, for which he undoubtedly employed the printer Friedrich Peypus, later his son-in-law. This volume also includes Gilles de Corbeil's Carmina de urinarum judiciis , but omits the epiloge found in Choulant's edition of that text. "Pinder's edition is not listed in Choulant's bibliography of printed editions of Gilles, and contains a number of variant readings not recorded by him" (Durling).
