PATTON, George S. Jr. Typed letter signed ("G S Patton Jr."), WITH TWO AUTOGRAPH POSTSCRIPTS totalling some 21 words, one signed ("P"), to his former aide Lt. Col. Charles H. Codman, Headquarters , Third United States Army. N.p., 18 August 1945. 1 full page, 4to, on Commanding General's stationery. "I AM SORRY THAT OUR WAR TOGETHER IS OVER." Patton, writing just three months after the end of the European conflict, describes a public ceremony in Paris at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and assures Codman he will try to get certain decorations awarded him: "..I have taken in hand the question of the Rosettes for the Legion of Honor and also wrote McCarthy and General Handy about the Eagle. Whether or not it comes out I do not know. I am sorry that our war together is over, but I am sure you are doing the right thing" [by returning to civilian status]. He goes on to speak of a planned fund to benefit Third Army veterans and adds: "Yesterday we had quite a show, which you would have enjoyed participating in, at the Invalides [in Paris] where we returned six former French flags which had been captured from the Germans, and later at the Arc de Triomphe where we laid a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There was quite a crowd and lots of Gallic enthusiasm."
