PATTON, George S., Jr. (1885-1945), Major General, U.S. Army . Patton's personal three-star flag signed ("G S Patton Jr Lt Gen") on a central white star. No place, no date [but undoubtedly signed between March 1943 and April 1945]. A Lt. General's Three-star flag (possibly used as a Headquarters flag), consising of three white stars (each 6¼ in. in diameter) on a deep red ground, machine sewn, overall dimensions 29½ x 20¼ in., including 1½ in. selvage with two brass grommets. SIGNED IN INK IN THE CENTER OF THE MIDDLE STAR (inscription slightly faded). Professionally matted, glazed and in a fine mahogany frame. PATTON'S THREE-STAR FLAG, SIGNED AT THE HEIGHT OF THE WAR IN EUROPE AND DONATED TO CHARITY A unique relic of one of the most successful though controversial American military commanders. Due to Patton's addition of his rank to his signature, the flag--which may have flown at a battlefield Headquarters site--represents Patton at the apogee of his military career in World War II. He held that three-star rank during the final stages of the Tunisian campaign, the Sicily Landings (where the infamous slapping incident took place), and while in command of the legendary Third Army in the Normandy breakout, the crossing of the Seine, the Battle of the Bulge, the relief of Bastogne and, finally, the crossing of the Rhine into southern Germany. VERY RARE, we have not located another such flag signed by Patton. Provenance : George S. Patton -- Beatrice Ayer Patton (1886-1953), his wife. The selvage on unsigned side with stenciled and ink notations recording its donation by "B. Patton" to an undated Officer's Wives Charity Auction, in which it was lot 25. Beatrice Patton devoted considerable time and support to various charitable groups during World War II and probably asked her husband to contribute the flag for this charity auction.
