Parliamentary Act. Reign of George III An Act for granting certain Duties in the British Colonies and Plantations in America; for allowing a Drawback of the Duties of Customs upon the Exportation, from this Kingdom, of Coffee and Cocoa Nuts of the Produce of the said Colonies or Plantations; for discontinuing the Drawbacks payable on China Earthen Ware exported to America; and for more effectually preventing the clandestine Running of Goods in the said Colonies and Plantations. London: Printed by Mark Baskett and the Assigns of Robert Baskett, 1767 Folio (314 x 197 mm). Woodcut arms of Great Britain, woodcut headpiece and initial, text in black letter, side notes in roman type. Disbound. The Revenue Act of 1767, one of the Townshend Acts, was passed by Parliament after the repeal of the Stamp Act to raise revenue at the expense of the colonies. It levied significant import duties on such common items as glass, lead, painters colors, paper, and tea. It gave customs officials broad authority to enforce the taxes and punish smugglers through the use of "writs of assistance," i.e., general warrants that could be used to search private property for smuggled goods.
