Parliamentary Act. Reign of George IIIAn Act to amend and render more effectual, in His Majesty's Dominions in America, an Act passed in this Present Session of Parliament, intituled, An Act for punishing Mutiny and Desertion, and for the better Payment of the Army and their Quarters. London: Printed by Mark Baskett and the Assigns of Robert Baskett, 1765 Folio (318 x 203 mm). Woodcut arms of Great Britain, woodcut headpiece and initial, text in black letter, side notes in roman type. Disbound. Brown cloth chemise and slipcase, brown morocco spine, upper cover and spine lettered gilt. The Quartering Act of 1765. A significant cause of heated unrest in the American colonies, this Act stipulated that the expense of quartering the British army in North America was the responsibility of the colonies; but the colonies refused to comply. The controversy over this Act led to the suspension of the New York Assembly in 1767 (see lot 182). REFERENCE:ESTC N56865
