(Light spotting.)18th-century red morocco gilt, monogram 'HD' on covers within fillets, spine in five compartments with raised bands decorated with small tools, red speckled edges. Two early woodcuts of labourers, one showing a mining scene, preserved on pastedowns. Provenance: 'H.D.' (binding) -- Guyon de Sardiere -- Du Vivier (signatures on title) -- note of purchase for £1-10 in 1834 on front pastedown. FIRST EDITION BY PLANTIN OF HIS FIRST EMBLEM BOOK , third edition overall. Landwehr notes that it is the first edition to combine Paradin's Devises (180 woodcuts), with those of Simeoni (37 woodcuts).
