Title: Opera D. Ambrosii Mediolanensis episcopi quatenus in hunc usque diem ubi ubi extare noscuntur... Author: Ambrosius Mediolanensis Place: [Lyon] Publisher: Apud Hugonem à Porta Date: 1549 Description: 116 pp.; 3036 [i.e. 2136] columns, [2] pp. With woodcut devices on title-page and colophon; woodcut initials within. (folio) 37x26 cm (14½x10"), old full vellum, marbled endpapers. Early edition of the works of Saint Ambrose, the Roman governor of Liguria and Emilia, who was made bishop of Milan and became one of the most influential ecclesiastical figures of the 4th century. Ambrose has been accused of fostering persecutions of Arians, Jews, and pagans. There were a number of editions in this format published in 1549, but OCLC/WorldCat does not record any with the Hugonem imprint, nor could we find any records of sale at auction through American Book Prices Current or Rare Book Hub. The columns for the 1549 editions in this format are misnumbered, skipping from 2099 to 3000. Lot Amendments Condition: Lacking leather ties for the covers; recased at some time, new flyleaves, lacking rear free endpaper, some light foxing within; near fine. Item number: 283337a
