Title: Notes of a Voyage to California Via Cape Horn, Together with Scenes in El Dorado, in the Years 1849-1850 Author: Upham, Samuel C. Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Published by the author Date: 1878 Description: [2], 7-594 pp. Illustrated with numerous wood-engraved plates; double frontispiece portraits. (8vo), original brown cloth decorated and lettered in gilt, beveled edges, page edges stained red. First Edition. "A clear and detailed account of a trip to California via Cape Horn in 1849, with return via Panama in 1850. The author was one of the original proprietors of the Sacramento Transcript, and the volume contains much of interest on early California newspapers and the Sacramento squatter riots of 1850" - Zamorano Eighty. Kurutz calls the book an "important reminiscence," and notes that it was sold by subscription in an edition of 600 copies. Cowan p.652; Howes U23; Kurutz 647; Wheat Gold Rush 215; Zamorano Eighty 76. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine sunned, light wear at extremities, bookplates on front and rear pastedown; light dampstain at lower corner; very good. Item number: 220795
