NEWTON, Sir Isaac (1642-1727). Autograph manuscript, n.d., notes of reading on the early history of the Franks, in Latin and English, citing sources including Procopius, St Gregory of Tours, the Gesta Francorum and others, a few entries lightly cancelled, presumably after copying, two pages, 4to (200 x 152mm) , (affected by damp, causing significant weakening to inner and lower margins, with some loss of text particularly at upper left and lower margins).

Newton's readings begin with a Latin citation on the courses of the rivers Rhine and Rhone, and a number of citations from St Gregory of Tours about the story of Childeric I, including his marrying Queen Basine of Thuringia, and Clovis, including his invasion of Thuringia. The verso begins with the note on the Franks' rejection of Roman rule, 'Franconia not called so till after their victory of ye Alemans', and on the location of Franconia, and ends with references to the battle of Adrianople (378) and to early Christian history ('then within one month, 17000 martyrs suffered for Christ').
