(Sir Isaac, natural philosopher and mathematician, 1642-1727) [Deed of sale]. Bargain and sale by Thomas Reines "of Woolstrope [Woolsthorpe] in ye Parish of Coulsterworth [Colsterworth]... Labourer, "the sum of eight pounds of good and lawful money of England" from Margaret and Geffery Fountaince, "of ye house in Woolstrope inhabited by Margaret ffountaince We say received...", autograph manuscript in Newton's hand, 1p., in a formal secretary hand, signed by Geoffrey and Margaret Fountaince with crosses by their names, old note pinned to sheet with ink inscription, "The paper unto which this bit is pin'd is the hand Writing of the Great Sr Isaac Newton who being then 37 Years of age" and in another hand, "Found among Title Deeds to an Estate at Woolsthorpe where Sir Isc. resided", inscription on verso, "Sir Isaac Newton's hand writing", folds, slightly browned, 200 x 195mm., [?Woolsthorpe], 29th September 1679. *** A legal agreement of the sale of a house in Woolsthorpe written by Sir Isaac Newton in the year of his mother's death. Isaac Newton's mother, Hannah, died in late May or early June 1679 and was buried beside her first husband (Newton's father) in Colsterworth Church, a few miles from Woolsthorpe. "With Hannah's passing, Newton became a wealthy gentleman. He stayed several months in Woolsthorpe, arranging business affairs and ensuring that the manor was looked after, that the handover to new residents was conducted smoothly, and that bills were settled. Hannah had died in the late spring, but Isaac stayed to supervise the cultivation during the summer as well as the autumn harvest." - Michael White Isaac Newton. The Last Sorcerer, 1997.
