Beschreibung:

Autograph letter signed "H More" to Mrs. Dicey, about Coelebs in Search of a Wife, 1809 (More's only novel).
Barley Wood: [franked 24 February 1809]. 3 1/3 pp., folded sheet (185 x 225 mm), with integral address panel. Condition : traces of former mounting to central fold, remnants of red wax seal, seal hole, postmarks. Provenance : George Milne sale; Christie’s New York/ Stonehill, 5 December 1991, lot 353 (part of) $1600, C.A. Stonehill. The letter begins cordially, thanking Mrs. Dicey for a letter, and reporting on her own health, “having been extremely ill all winter, with suffering greater than I can express. Gods will be done!” Ms. More expresses irritation, however, at being discovered as the author of Coelebs , despite her “impenetrable disguise” , and speaks of the book’s conclusion as a burden lifted: “…the Bath Booksellers…had the extreme impertinence to post up my name in their shops as the Author! Its inception has been far beyond its deserts. If it shoud be useful to the young and the gay who will not look for religion in books which teach it in a graver and more serious form, I shall have a high reward… I believe the new Edition is now ready
