WOMEN AUTHORS]. SMITH, CHARLOTTE (1749-1806, novelist and poet). Autograph letter signed to the publisher Thomas Cadell (in Yarmouth), Brighton, 7 September 1791, 2 1/2 pages, 4to, integral address leaf, center fold reinforced with tape (lightly staining left edge of first page) , docketed by Cadell. A fine letter, entirely about her new novel [probably Desmond , published the following year]: "...The Novel which I have begun is meant to convey in the form of Letters & under the illusion of a Love story, the present state of France not however at all in the style of Miss [Helen Maria] Williams. I hope to be at home within a month [after a trip to France] with my two little Volumes finished. You declin'd the purchase of them I think, because some circumstances in regard to the Printing of Celestina [1791] had given you uneasiness which you are determined not to hazard again..."--EDGEWORTH, MARIA. Two autograph letters signed, to a Miss Humpage and a Mr. [?Joseph] Strutt, Berkley Lodge and n.p., 19 May 1819 and 18 November 1829, together 2 pages, 4to, the second with integral address leaf (seal hole) , concerning gifts sent to her--MORE, HANNAH. Autograph letter signed ("H More") to Mrs. Dicey, Barley Wood, [postmarked 24 February 1809], 3 1/2 pages, 8vo, remnants of mounting, a small hole with loss of two words. A fine letter: "...you were one among the many who discovered me thro what I thought my impenetrable disguise. I had hoped to have escaped detection and that the Author of Coelebs (her one novel, Coelebs in Search of a Wife , published anonymously in 1808) would never have been suspected. But I believe I have had fifty letters, to say that the internal evidence betray'd it...the Bath Booksellers...had the extreme impertinence to post up my name in their Shops as the Author! Its reception has been far beyond its deserts. If it should be useful to the young and the gay who will not look for religion in books which teach it in a graver and more serious form, I shall have a high reward...It has been a great misfortune that it has been so long out of print but I believe the new Edition is now ready..."; Three autograph letters signed ("H More") to various recipients, Barley Wood and n.p., 6 May 1809, 4 December 1823, and n.d., together 7 pages, 18mo-4to, one with remnants of mounting, another with a small seal tear, with an engraved portrait. The 1809 letter is to the author and bookseller Joseph Cottle: "...I am quite vexed you have got a Copy of Coelebs [see above] because I intended when ever I acknowledged the rect. of Mr. Child's Bill to beg you to accept one from me. This you must still do. I inclose a line to Hatchard which you will at your leisure leave yourself that you may choose your own binding..."; Document signed (in full), one page, oblong 8vo, a copy of an agreement for a loan of #500 from More to David Garrick originally made on 1 January 1778 and repaid (some #618, including interest) on 3 October 1782 (from his estate), this copy signed and dated (6 February 1793) by More, with official stamp--MITFORD, MARY RUSSELL. Autograph letter signed ("M R Mitford") to Miss Goldsmid, n.p., n.d., 6 pages, small 12mo, regarding the problems of dealing with publishers, particularly in the case of translation--BYRON, ANNE ISABELLA, Lady Noel. Autograph letter signed (third person: "Lady Noel Byron" twice) to Mrs. Smith, Leamington, 10 October N.Y., 1 1/2 pages, 8vo, a social note--BERRY, AGNES. Autograph letter signed to Mrs. Mostyn, [London], n.d., 2 pages, small 12mo, a social note. Nearly all with typed transcripts. (Milne) (11)
