Montre poche Split Second n°286902 en acier signée G. Léon Breitling S.A. La Chaud-de-Fond, cadran blanc avec chiffre arabes noirs. Cette montre est sans aucun doute l'une des rares montre de poche avec la fonction Split Second signée G. Léon Breitling S.A. La Chaud-de-Fond. Historique: La Fabrique d'Horlogerie Breitling a été créée à St Imier en 1884 par Léon Breitling. Il y avait déjà des horlogers dans la famille et on pourrait donc faire remonter la lignée à une date encore antérieure. L'entreprise s'est d'emblée spécialisée dans les chronographes et les compteurs, qui étaient très demandés en cette fin de 19e siècle pour le chronométrage sportif, les applications militaires et industrielles, et elle est rapidement devenue l'une des plus importantes fabriques suisses de ce type de montres. Bien que l'entreprise soit toujours active de nos jours, on sait très peu de choses sur les montres qui ont été produites à St Imier puis à La Chaux-de-Fonds avant les années 1940. De plus, au début de son existence Breitling ne signait pas ses cadrans ni ses mouvements, ce qui était d'ailleurs assez courant à cette époque car cela permettait au détaillant de mettre sur le cadran son propre nom. Mais, curieusement, chez Breitling ces cadrans vierges ont existé jusqu'à la fin des années 1930, y compris sur les chronographes-bracelets, alors que tous ses concurrents arboraient fièrement leurs patronymes. Il est donc difficile aujourd'hui d'attribuer un chronographe à Breitling, que ce soit un chronographe de poche ou bracelet datant d'avant 1940. A cela se rajoute le nombre important de montres modifiées avec des cadrans refaits ou des gravures ajoutées sur les ponts des mouvements, ce qui ne facilite pas la recherche de la vérité historique... History: The Breitling watchmaking manufacture was founded in 1884 at Saint-Imier by Léon Breitling. There were watchmakers in his ancestry so the lineage could be traced back further. The company specialized in chronometers and counters that were much sought after in the 19th century to time sports events, and for military and industrial applications. It rapidly became one of the largest Swiss watchmaking manufactures. Though the factory is still operating, we know very little about the watch production at Saint-Imier and later Chaud-de-Fond before the 1940s. Also, in the early days of the Breitling concern, the company did not sign its dials or movements, quite common practice in those days as it allowed the distributors to have the dial inscribed with their logos. Surprisingly Breitling dials remained blank until the late thirties, even the wrist watch chronographs, while their competitors proudly claimed their production. It is therefore quite difficult to attribute the Breitling name to any pocket chronograph or bracelet prior to 1940.
