MITELLI, Giuseppe Maria (1634-1718). L'arti per via disegnate, intagliate, et offerte... da Gioseppe M a : Mittelli. [Bologna: 1660]. 2° (332 x 235mm). Etched throughout. Title with engraved vignette of Bologna, 40 plates of various Bolognese tradesmen and street vendors, all by Mitelli. (One plate with some later hand-colouring, occasional light spotting and soiling.) Old limp vellum (recased, with modern endpapers). A FINE SET, ALL EARLY STATES, BEFORE THE ADDITION OF NUMBERS. The designs for the series are sometimes attributed to Annibale Carracci (see Bartsch). The third state of the present work, published by Giovanni Giacomo Rossi in Rome, has the plates before numbers and a variant title attributes the work to Carracci. The series is, in fact, only very loosely based on Carracci's designs, published as Diverse figure . (Rome: 1646) by G.A.Massini. Cf. Bartsch 42, nos.117-157.
