MATTIOLI, PIETRO ANDREA. Commentarii secundo aucti, in libros sex Pedacii Dioscoridis Anazarbei de Medica Materia. Venice: Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1559. Two parts in one, folio, 312 x 207 mm., sixteenth century calf, covers with central gilt emblem device surrounded by a gilt floral wreath, rebacked, some wear; title and first few preliminaries with margins darkened and frayed, early ink inscriptions inked-out on title, few marginal repairs at end, occasional marginal soiling. Third Latin edition, and the second to include the Apologia (with title dated 1559), with woodcut printer's device on titles (and at end) and approximately 700 woodcuts in text (including 133 new woodcuts). Adams D-668 (with title of Apologia dated 1558); Nissen BBI 1305; NLM/Durling 3010. Provenance : Petipury(?), Lille, inscription on titles (dated "22 Fev. 1814") -- George Harrar Rodwell, bookplate -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate.
