[Mathematics] LAGRANGE, Joseph-Louis Traité de la résolution des équations numériques de tous les degrés, avec des notes sur plusieurs points de la théorie des équations algébriques. Paris, Bachelier (successeur de Mme Vve Courcier), 4to: xxviii-314-[pp. (some min. spotting). Contemp. mottled sheep, gilt border on covers titled "Collège Royal de Versailles" (corners rubbed, scratches on covers), gilt orn. flat spine (joints rubbed, head and tail def.), marbled endpapers, marbled edges. Third edition (first by the Enlightenment Era mathematician and astronomer Lagrange (1736-who made significant contributions to the fields of analysis, number theory, and both classical and celestial mechanics. Important work on the origin of group theory and modern algebra. Lagrange gives the method of approximating the true root of a numerical equation by continuous fractions, as well as the proof that every equation must have a root. P Ref. BnF. - COPAC. - Poggendorff I:Prov. Guillaume Viennon (prize book awarded in to Guillelmus Viennon, student at "Collegium Regium Versaliense", as indicated on the "prize leaf"; prize binding).
