Six albums, containing a fine range of letters etc. by distinguished figures, largely from the Victorian period, including John Stuart Mill, George Eliot (autograph envelope front to her close friend Miss [Sara] Hennell), Empress Charlotte of Mexico (attractive carte-de-visite, showing her full-length in bonnet and furs, signed "Charlotte"), H.W. Longfellow (about a suspicious charitable appeal), George Bernard Shaw (card, 1895, withdrawing his nomination), Marie Corelli (to her publishers Skeffington & Son, announcing completion of her latest novel [The Murder of Delicia] and promising to add a preface explaining why she is dealing with a topic "which cannot but be humiliating to certain gentlemen" [the preface states, inter alia, that 'There are any number of women who work night and day with brain and hand to support useless and brainless husbands']), Mary H. Kingsley, George MacDonald, R.M. Ballantyne (incomplete letter illustrated with sketches of Indians and Sqaws), Ouida, Rhoda Broughton (to Eliza Lynn Linton), Annie Ritchie, Josephine Butler, Kipling (to the publishers Skeffington & Sons), Roderick Murchison (to Thomas Dick, 1857, asking to be supplied with "a few really good thing in the ichthyic line" for the Museum of Practical Geology, aware as he is "of the talent you have evinced in collecting rare & good specimens of the fossil fishes of the Caithness Flags"), William B. Carpenter, John Tyndall, Herbert Spencer Lord Shaftesbury, Hallé, Balfe, Stanford, du Maurier (sketches attributed to), Leopold II of the Belgians, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Millicent Fawcett, and others, in six albums, cover loose etc., 4to
