Title: Loss of the American Brig Commerce, Wrecked on the Western Coast of Africa in the Month of August, 1815. With an Account of Tombuctoo, and of the Hetherto Undiscovered Great City of Wassanah Author: Riley, James Place: London Publisher: John Murray Date: 1817 Description: [ii], [vii]-xvi, 618 pp. Folding map. (4to) 10½x8½, rebound in modern red cloth. First English Edition. The Commerce struck near Cape Bojador on August 28, 1815. The whole crew reached shore but the Arabs forced them back to the wreck. They repaired the boat and after their second landing near Cape Barba, they were captured and enslaved by Arabs. After many adventures Riley was ransomed by the British consul in Mogadore. This was one of the most popular books of the 19th century in the United States, probably because of interest in the Arab countries developed in the wars with the Barbary States, and because of its interesting reverse view of slavery. Sabin 71389 Lot Amendments Condition: Apparently lacking several of the preliminary leaves; title page soiled; light foxing; else very good. Item number: 185735
