LODDIGES, Conrad and Sons (publishers). The Botanical Cabinet. Consisting of Coloured Delineations of Plants from all Countries . London: W. Wilson for C. Loddiges & Sons, et al., 1817-1826. Volumes I-XII (only, of 20), 4° (213 x 160mm). Engraved titles. 1,200 hand-coloured engraved plates, some heightened with gum arabic and/or with colour-printed bases, and 3 engraved plates. Indices bound in at the end of each volume and index to vols I-X at the end of vol. X. Catalogue of Plants ... sold by Conrad Loddiges & Sons (London: 1818, 11th edition, 55pp.) bound in at the end of vol. II; 'On Warming Greenhouses' by Steam (9pp.) at the end of vol. III; Catalogue of Plants ... sold by Conrad Loddiges and Sons (London: 1820, 12th edition, 56pp.) at the end of vol. IV; Catalogue of Plants, in the Collection of Conrad Loddiges and Sons (London: 1822, 13th edition, 48pp.) at the end of vol. VIII. (Some light spotting and offsetting, occasional light marking, titles a little spotted, light dampstaining on title and first few leaves of vol. I, pl. 1050 bound upside-down, pl. 1137 ash-marked, pls 537, 604, 947, 995, 1004, 1054, 1103, and 1128 trimmed touching image.) Contemporary straight-grained roan gilt, rebacked with gilt spines, marbled edges (rubbed and scuffed with small losses at extremities, some lettering-pieces chipped, detached or lacking, hinges reinforced, vol. VI lower hinge and vol. XII upper hinge split). Provenance : General Sir Moore Disney (1765/6-1846, bookplates in vols I-IV) -- Baron Dickinson Webster (1818-1860, bookplates). LARGE-PAPER ISSUE WITH THE PLATES FULLY COLOURED. Conrad Loddiges a Dutch-born horticulturalist, settled in Hackney as a nurseryman in about 1761, and the Loddiges introduced many new and exotic species to Britain, becoming particularly well known for their fine stock of plants from the United States. This set is unusual in that it retains three of Loddiges' Catalogues. Arnold Arboretum p. 437 (12th and 13th editions of the Catalogue); Cleveland Collections 806; Dunthorne 187; Great Flower Books (1990) p.160; Hunt B-P-H p.219; Nissen BBI 2228; Stafleu and Cowan 4914 and 4913 (Catalogues).
