Loddiges & Sons [and others], 1818-1833. 20 volumes, 4° (211 x 160mm). Engraved additional titles, 2000 hand-coloured numbered engraved plates by George Cooke after G. Loddiges, W. Loddiges, Miss J. Loddiges, G. Cooke, E.W. Cooke, W.I. Cooke, Thomas Shotter Boys W. Miller, P. Heath, J.P. Heath and Miss Rebello, 61 folding, and three uncoloured plates. (Some light spotting, occasional heavy spotting to titles, plates 484 and 1128 shaved with loss to image area, plate 349 somewhat smudged, outer margin of three of the folding plates soiled.) Uniform contemporary blue half calf by J. Seacome of Chester, spines in six compartments delineated by gilt fillets and wavy line roll-tool (spines and extremities worn, some joints split, upper cover of vol. XI detached, most spine labels lacking). Provenance : James Tomkinson (of Cheshire, armorial bookplate). LARGE PAPER ISSUE OF THIS MONUMENTAL WORK WITH FINE, FRESH PLATES. It was originally published in monthly fasicles between May 1817 and December 1833, each part containing ten plates and priced at 5s. The small paper issue (with the plates only partially hand-coloured) was published simultaneously at 2s 6d per part. The third volume in the present set also includes an 8pp. article 'On Warming Hothouses by Steam' (illustrated with 2 uncoloured plates). The text for plate number 2000 (an orchid, named by Lindley Cynoches Loddigesii ) includes a final statement 'Having been able to complete our twentieth volume ... our labours are closed; the precarious state of our draughtsman's health not permitting him to go any further....' Conrad Loddiges a Dutch-born horticulturalist, settled in Hackney as a nurseryman in about 1761. This family-based work was edited by his son, George (1784-1846). The Loddiges introduced many new species to Britain, becoming particularly well known for their fine stock of plants from the United States.
