LAVOISIER, Antoine Laurent (1743-94). Traité Elémentaire de Chimie, Présenté dans un Ordre... LAVOISIER, Antoine Laurent (1743-94). Traité Elémentaire de Chimie, Présenté dans un Ordre Nouveau et d' après les Découvertes Modernes. Paris: Chez Cuchet, 1789. 2 volumes, 8vo (210 x 125mm). Half titles, woodcut ornaments on titles, headpieces and ornaments, 13 folding engraved plates by the author's wife, Marie Anne Pierrette Paulze Lavoisier, tables, including 2 folding, 2-pages of errata at the end of vol. II (gathering D in the first vol. bound out of sequence, plate XIII torn at margin, folding tables browned, variable spotting, staining and browning). Modern full vellum, spines gilt, uncut, new marbled endpapers. Provenance: some very localised later pencil underlining and annotation. FIRST EDITION, second expanded issue, containing tables and extracts from The Academie des Sciences and other scientific institutions which are not included in the single-volume first, or trial, issue, of which only two copies are known. Dibner 43: "By the use of the balance of weight determination at every chemical change and the building of a rational system of elements, Lavoisier laid the foundation of modern chemistry"; Duveen 159; Horblit 64; Norman 1295; PMM 238; Wellcome III, p.460; not in Brunet. "This book accomplished a chemical revolution ... [Lavoisier] finally established the modern conception of elements as substances which cannot be further decomposed. His 'Elementary Treatise on Chemistry' contains a list of twenty-three such elements, which are still recognized today ... One of the most important consequences of Lavoisier's work was the establishment of the concept of the conservation of matter. Compound bodies were now found to represent the combined weight of the simple bodies of which they are composed, while, when these simple bodies are withdrawn, they have the same weight as was put into them; i.e. matter remains constant throughout all chemical change. Lavoisier's book put an end to the phlogiston theory and the surviving remnants of alchemy" (PMM). (2)
