A letter in disdain, Knopf reacts to Cain's article in Willa Cather in the August 13 [1973] issue of Time . 2) Hyattsville, MD: 13 September 1973. Typed letter signed from James Cain to Alfred A. Knopf on Cain's stationery. Cain replies to Knopf's unhappy note, he explains his assumptions regarding the ill-received article. 3) Hyattsville, MD: 8 September 1974. Typed letter signed from "Jim" [Cain] to Mrs. Lynn Sheehan. A letter stating his loss of his letter from Knopf that Mrs. Sheehan desires to see. In the original envelope. 4) Washington, DC: 13 September 1974. Typed letter signed from Susan Sheehan to James Cain on The New Yorker stationery. Sheehan, Knopf's biographer requests a meeting with Cain and to see some of his personal letters. 5) Santa Barbara, CA: 5 September 1973. Autograph letter signed "It was marvellous luck to have come under your wing, As always, Ken" to "Dear Alfred". A note tinged with sadness, Millar writes "I feel as though an era is ending…" Condition : some light toning, few creases. 6) Santa Barbara, CA: 20 September 1977. Autograph letter signed "Our love to you and Helen, ever, Ken" to "Dear Alfred". A note of birthday congratulations and usual updates. 7) [New York:] 28 September 1977. Retained carbon copy of a typed letter unsigned from "AAK" to Kenneth Millar. A reply to Millar's birthday wishes from the above letter, a generally happy note.
