KENNEDY, John F. and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (1929-1994), President and First Lady . AN INTIMATE GLIMPSE OF THE KENNEDYS - PLANNING THE INAUGURAL SEATING. John and Jackie's corrected inaugural seating chart which provides a fascinating record of their close attention to the minute details of this memorable occasion. On a lengthy typed list, Kennedy and his wife have made various pencil corrections and changes, reflecting likes, dislikes and propriety. Each page has been titled "Suggested Boxes." Page one lists the guests for the presidential box. Several names have been crossed off, including the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and Prince and Princess Radziwill. Jackie has written in the left margin, "Have Mayor Daley & Mrs in this box - tell Mayor Daley." She has also included the names Mr. and Mrs. James Reed and Mr. and Mrs. William Green Page Two, which lists box one through seven, has extensive corrections and changes. The President elect has written on the middle of the page: "Lawrence?," "Box for family," "Ball" and has written "no" next to several names including Mr. and Mrs. Irving Berlin and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sullivan. Next to Kennedy's notes, Jackie has written "Tickets - not boxes -" and "Jacko." Jackie has also made several other changes including the transposition of couples originally listed in the presidential box and others on page two. Jackie has made extensive corrections to page three, which lists the seating for boxes eight through fourteen. Several names have been crossed out. Jackie writes concerning the Shrivers (in box ten), "Have Sarge & Eunice have a box which their family & frie[nds]." She has also written, "Have Ethel have a box to which her family can go" underneath of which she writes, "Tickets not boxes." Her changes to page three conclude with, "Have Steve Smith have one box - which his family & friends can use." The corrections to page four (boxes fifteen through nineteen) are less extensive, but next to the attendees in boxes fifteen and sixteen, which had been reserved for Kennedy's comrades on PT-109 and their families, Jackie has written "PT boat." The corrections continue on the last three pages (boxes twenty through forty), including two more cases where John has written "no" next to couples. The inauguration of John F. Kennedy, held on January 20, 1961, was one of the most famous in presidential history. Not only was Kennedy the first Catholic and the youngest man to be inaugurated as president, but the speech he gave on that day was memorable. He boldly asked Americans to follow him into the future, reminding them to "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country."
