Keith Sonnier est un artiste américain qui appartient au mouvement post-minimalisme. Partageant l’anti-illusionnisme de Carl Andre Dan Flavin ou Sol LeWitt l’artiste cherche toutefois une forme de narration et d’expressivité plus marquée dans ses œuvres. Réinventant la sculpture par de nouveaux matériaux et en expérimentant des formes nouvelles, il est l’un des premiers artistes à intégrer la lumière dans ses œuvres, en créant notamment des néons courbes dès la fin des années 1960. Le MoMA de New York lui consacre une première exposition dès 1971, permettant à l’artiste de concevoir une visite interactive avec le public, grâce à des installations visuelles, lumineuses et sonores. Quelques années plus tard, en 1979, le Centre Pompidou expose les œuvres de Keith Sonnier lors d’une exposition personnelle.

‌Keith Sonnier is an American artist who belongs to the post-minimalism movement. Sharing the anti-illusionism of Carl Andre Dan Flavin or Sol LeWitt he nevertheless seeks a more marked form of narration and expressiveness in his works. Reinventing sculpture with new materials and experimenting with new forms, he is one of the first artists to integrate light into his work, notably by creating curved neons from the late 1960's. The MoMA in New York devoted a first exhibition to him in 1971, allowing the artist to design an interactive visit with the public, thanks to visual, light and sound installations. A few years later, in 1979, the Centre Pompidou held a solo exhibition of Keith Sonnier's work.
