Hoyland tended towards the grand ambition of huge works at this time, however this work is no more powerful in presence, and perhaps more so, for its more personal and rare scale. Robert Motherwell said that Hoyland could be the new Turner. With the spread of light and colour in this painting conveying such rich emotion, you can understand why he made this observation.
