JOHN HOYLAND (1934-2011)Shimmy 1977 signed, titled and dated John Hoyland/SHIMMY/23-7-77 on the reverse acrylic on canvas 101.5 by 76 cm 39 7/8 by 29 7/8 in. FootnotesProvenance Waddington and Tooth Galleries, London Bernard Jacobson Gallery, London Private Collection (acquired directly from the above in 1979) Sale: Christie's, London, 20th Century British Art, 16 December 2010, Lot 73 Sale: Christie's, London, Modern British & Irish Art Day Sale, 21 June 2016, Lot 214 Acquired directly from the above by the present owner This painting is a rarely executed smaller work of the late 70s. Hoyland tended towards the grand ambition of huge works at this time, however this work is no more powerful in presence, and perhaps more so, for its more personal and rare scale. Robert Motherwell said that Hoyland could be the new Turner. With the spread of light and colour in this painting conveying such rich emotion, you can understand why he made this observation. The Hoyland Estate are currently preparing the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the Artist's work and would like to hear from owners of any work by the Artist so that these can be included in this comprehensive catalogue. Please write to The Hoyland Estate, c/o Modern British and Irish Art, Bonhams, 101 New Bond Street, London, W1S 1SR or email britart@bonhams.comSaleroom noticesPlease note that the 'W' symbol has been removed. The lot and will be available for collection from New Bond Street.
