FIELD, JOHN Collection of contemporary editions and manuscripts, including the Second Piano Concerto, sonatas and nocturnes, Leipzig & Berlin: 1820s 1) Second Concerto pour le Pianoforte avec grand Orchestre, in A-flat [solo piano part], Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, [1819]; 37 pages, folio, lithographed, plate no.3015, original stitching, unbound, [Hopkinson 31 A (a)] 2) Trois Romances [ie nocturnes] pour le Piano-Forte, Berlin: F.S. Lischke, c.1820; 13 pages, oblong 4to, engraved throughout, plate no. 1145, [Hopkinson, 14E (c); Hopkinson 24 A(d); Hopkinson 25 A (d) 3) Sonate pour le pianoforte composée et dédiée à Muzio Clementi par son Elève John Field no.II (but no.1 in E-flat), Leipzig: C.F. Peters, [c.1808]; Sonate pour le Piano=Forte No.1 (but no.2 in A), Berlin: F.S. Lischke, [c.1822]; [Hopkinson 8C (a) & 8C (c)], bound with 6 works by Kalkbrenner (2, and one in manuscript), Cramer and Reissiger, oblong 4to, contemporary marbled boards 4) Manuscript of "Aria Russa Variata per il Piano Forte a quattro mani composta da Gio. Field", 7 pages, including title, oblong folio, c.1812-1813 [cf Hopkinson 10 D] 5) Nocturnes pour Piano, Brunswick: H. Litolff, [1870], 8vo, embossed boards gilt, [Hopkinson, 24 A (t) etc] Contemporary source material for the Irish composer John Field (1782-1837) is seldom offered for sale. We have traced none at auction. His sixteen numbered nocturnes, some of which he later revised from early pieces, were a major influence on Chopin and Liszt. Hopkinson records four copies of the 1819 edition of the Second Concerto complete with the orchestral parts and two more without. However the British Library's copy only contains the original piano solo, the orchestral parts being from a later issue of c.1860. WorldCat records a set of the orchestral parts in the Landesbibliothek, Oldenburg. Hopkinson states that Breitkopf & Härtel first published the work in 1816, but that only a single piano part (in London) and a single violin part (in Washington) survive. Robin Langley records a first edition published in Moscow in 1811, not found in WorldCat. The second item, Trois Romances, contains versions of the Pastorale in A major, Nocturne No. 1 in E-flat and Nocturne No.2 in C minor, LITERATURE: C.
