Litolff, [1870], 8vo, embossed boards gilt, [Hopkinson, 24 A (t) etc] Contemporary source material for the Irish composer John Field (1782-1837) is seldom offered for sale. We have traced none at auction. His sixteen numbered nocturnes, some of which he later revised from early pieces, were a major influence on Chopin and Liszt. Hopkinson records four copies of the 1819 edition of the Second Concerto complete with the orchestral parts and two more without. However the British Library's copy only contains the original piano solo, the orchestral parts being from a later issue of c.1860. WorldCat records a set of the orchestral parts in the Landesbibliothek, Oldenburg. Hopkinson states that Breitkopf & Härtel first published the work in 1816, but that only a single piano part (in London) and a single violin part (in Washington) survive. Robin Langley records a first edition published in Moscow in 1811, not found in WorldCat. The second item, Trois Romances, contains versions of the Pastorale in A major, Nocturne No. 1 in E-flat and Nocturne No.2 in C minor, LITERATURE: C.
