He held the position of Court painter to Emperor Alexander I in St Petersburg from 1817 to 1828. Tsar Alexander I of Russia (1777-1825), in black coat with red collar embroidered with gold oak leaves, gold epaulettes, black stock, wearing the blue moiré silk sash of the Russian Order of St. Andrew and the breast star of this order superimposed on the Order of the Garter, combined with the Swedish Royal Order of the Sword, the badges of St. George of Russia, the Russian campaign medal of 1812, the Maria Theresia and the badge of the Royal Prussian Order of the Iron Cross.
