Property from the Sporting and Travel Library of Arnold "Jake" Johnson[INDIA — SPORTING AND TRAVEL]The India Sporting Review. Vol. 1, March-June, 1845 — Vol. 22, September-December, 1855. Calcutta: The Star Press, 1845-1855; Calcutta: Sanders, Cone and Co., 1853; Clacutta: R.C. Lepage and Co., British Library, 1856 37 volumes, 8vo. In-text illustrations throughout including many hand-colored as well as uncolored plates, folding maps, and charts; some spotting, a few closed marginal tears, one or two tears with loss, some pages repaired with old tape, one or two plates with some rubbing, one or two leaves loose, occasional offsetting, occasional dampstaining, a few corners clipped, some plates shaved, one or two volumes with pencil or contemporary ink annotations. Various bindings. The 37 volumes present here represent a comprehensive, though not contiguous, set of the first and second series of this scarce journal. Professing to be "a record of the turf, the chase, the gun, and the spear," The India Sporting Review offered commentary and results on races and matches held throughout the British Empire and beyond, making it a particularly attractive periodical for gentleman residing in India during the mid-nineteenth century. Issued quarterly, and formerly titled The Bengal Sporting Magazine, the serial ran between 1845-1859 (see British Library catalogue) and was edited by "Abel East," the pen name of a James Hume. Beyond chronicling sporting results, the Review also featured travel narratives and articles pertaining to natural history, and the various discoveries of the amateur scientists that the era produced. For example, the Review was accessible to Charles Darwin, who read some of Edward Blyth's notes in this journal, with Blyth publishing under the name "Zoophilus." These proved to be influential in the composition of his On the Origin of Species.
