Lexikon [In Greek]. Dictionarium. Venice: Aldus Manutius 1514. Folio (332 x 210 mm). a-z8 A8 B6. Double column, Greek type; preface in italic. Printer's dolphin & anchor device on title and on final leaf. Edited by Marcus Musurus. 18th century calf, rebacked with spine gilt in 6 compartments with raised bands. Occasional toning to leaves, light crease and a short repaired edge-tear to title, rebacked, covers discolored at edges and scuffed. Provenance: Richard Copley Christie (bookplate, and his arms at foot of spine); Enriqueta Augustina Rylands [1843-1908]; gift to the John Rylands University Library of Manchester (small stamp at foot of a1v, Rylands sale, Sotheby's, Apr 14, 1988, lot 36). FIRST EDITION OF THE GREEK TEXT. Hesychius compiled the most extensive dictionary of classical Greek extant. As a discrete work it survives in only a single manuscript, though it also forms the basis of a large part of the Suda. The surviving manuscript (now Biblioteca Marciana MS 622) belonged to the Mantuan scholar Giangiacomo Bordellone whom Aldus thanks in his preface for loaning it to Musurus so that it could be published for the first time. Adams H506; Renouard p 66.
