[Ottoman Turkey, first half of 16th century.] 758 leaves recto and verso, folio, 31 lines of black naskhi script with principal words in larger red or black, text blocks outlined in blue and gilt rule, floral headpiece of gold, blue, light blue, green and pink. Period[?] shagreen, remnants of decoration. Custom quarter calf clamshell box. Dampstain to top margin, heavier at ends affecting text near gutter on about 30 leaves, rebacked preserving portion of original spine. Provenance: Hagop Kevorkian [1872-1962] (book label with inventory number 758, penciled lot number but the auction date unspecified). Fairuzabadi's dictionary is one of the central reference works of the Arabic language. Numerous commentaries were written on it and it was the primary source for Antonio Giggeo's Thesaurus Linguae Arabicae of 1632. It was compiled between 1368 and 1392 while the author was living in Mecca.
