Literature Claude Duthuit 83 Artist Bio Henri Matisse French • 1869 - 1954 Hugely influential, Henri Matisse was, along with his friend and rival Pablo Picasso one of the artistic giants of the Modern era. Known for his lyrical, expressive line and bold coloration, Matisse worked in painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. Originally a member of the Fauvism movement of the start of the twentieth century, the next half-century found Matisse forging his own style characterized by spontaneous and deceptively simple draftsmanship and inventive vibrant color.
