GOSPELS -- Sviashchennoe Evangelie . [Holy Gospels.] Moscow: Synodal Press, 1881. 4° (245 x 160mm). Text printed in red and black within engraved borders. 4 engraved plates. (2 leaves with repaired tears in the margin, very occasional minor spotting.) Contemporary red velvet with a painted panel of birch wood mounted on each cover, brass catch and clasps, edges gilt, endpapers lined with white moiré style paper, in a contemporary red velvet folding box lined with white silk and with brass catch, clasp, and bosses (box rubbed). Provenance : Anastasiia Mikhailovna, Grand Duchess of Russia (1860-1922; binding). IN AN EXCEPTIONAL BINDING PAINTED FOR GRAND DUCHESS ANASTASIIA MIKHAILOVNA, and in its original silk and velvet case. The covers are panelled with Russian birch and finely painted, on the front, with the Resurrected Christ floating above the tomb and accompanied by two angels, and, on the rear, with a garland made of grass and blue forget-me-nots centred with the crowned monogram of Anastasiia Mikhailovna. Grand Duchess Anastasiia was a grand daughter of Nicholas I, and niece of Alexander II, who gave her away when she married Friedrich Franz III of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
