Beschreibung:

BIBLE, Gospels, Slavonic -- Sviashchennoe Evangelie [ Holy Gospels ]. Kiev: Pecherskaia Lavra, 1759. 8 in fours (175 x 110mm). Title within woodcut border, a full-page woodcut of the Crucifixion on the verso, four full-page woodcut illustrations of the Evangelists by the monks Irinei and Filaret, 7-line woodcut of the Last Supper on f.XX3, woodcut head-pieces and initials, the Gospels headings and first initials printed in red, typographic ornaments in the text. (Slightly soiled throughout, a few leaves affected by damp, ff.IA2-3 slightly loose, margins of first and last two leaves strengthened.) Russian silver-gilt and niello binding by the unknown alderman, initials A.O B, assay master Stepan Belkin, Moscow, 1782, on stippled gilt ground, the upper cover with nielloed central oval of the Deisis within foliate scrolls with the Evangelists at the corners, the lower cover with the Mother of God enthroned in the Tree of Jesse, both within palmate borders, the spine in six compartments with symbols of the Faith, edges gauffered and gilt (lacks clasps, hinges slightly weak). Printed in Kiev by the noted press at the Monastery of the Caves during the reign of the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna (1742-1761/2), with the title dedication to her and her nephew and heir Peter Feodorovich (later Tsar Peter III) and his wife Catherine Alekseevna, later Catherine II the Great, during whose reign the sumptuous binding was made. The Gospels in small format were usually printed for private use (Altar Gospels were in folio), and this binding is extremely rich. Unfortunately there is no indication of provenance showing for whom it was made. See V.M. Undol'skii, Ocherk slaviano-russkoi bibliografii , (Moscow: 1871), no.2285; S.O. Petrov et al. Slavianskie knigi kirillovskoi pechati XV-XVIII vv. , (Kiev: 1958), no.748; F.P. Maksymenko, Kyrylychni starodruky ukrayins'kykh drukaren' ... 1574-1800 , (Lvov: 1975), no.400; C.L. Drage, Russian & Church Slavonic Books 1701-1800 in United Kingdom Libraries , (London: 1984), no.192.
