GOODMAN, Christopher (1520?-1603). How superior powers oght to be obeyd of their subjects: and wherin they may lawfully by Gods Worde be disobeyed and resisted. Wherin also is declared the cause of all this present miserie in England, and the onely way remedy the same. Geneva: Jean Crespin, first of January 1558. Small 8° (132x80mm). Collation: a-p 8 , including final blank. Woodcut printer's device on title and emblematic woodcut on p7 v . 19th-century blue morocco gilt by Pratt, edges gilt. Provenance : Cardiff Castle bookplate. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Goodman was closely associated with John Knox; they were jointly pastors at Geneva, and he took part in Coverdale's translation of the Bible. The present work is a violent attack on Queen Mary and government by women in general, and in favour of Wyatt's Rebellion. It was published the same year as Knox's famous tract; both circulated secretly in England. STC 12020 (issue with the final woodcut with Latin and English mottoes)
