Foxe, John ACTES AND MONUMENTS OF MATTERS MOST SPECIALL AND MEMORABLE, HAPPENING IN THE CHURCH, WITH AN UNIVERSALL HISTORY OF THE SAME. WHEREIN IS SET FORTH AT LARGE THE WHOLE RACE AND COURSE OF THE CHURCH, FROM THE PRIMITIVE AGE TO THESE LATTER TIMES OF OURS, WITH THE BLOUDY TIMES, HORRIBLE TROUBLES, AND GREAT PERSECUTIONS AGAINST THE TRUE MARTYRS OF CHRIST, SOUGHT AND WROUGHT AS WELL BY HEATHEN EMPEROURS, AS NOW LATELY PRACTISED BY ROMISH PRELATES, ESPECIALLY IN THIS REALME OF ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND. … THE FIFT TIME NEWLY IMPRINTED. PRINTED BY PETER SHORT, DWELLING ON BREADSTREETE HILL AT THE SIGNE OF THE STARRE, BY THE ASSIGNE OF R. DAY, 1596–1597 2 volumes, folio (15 x 10 in.; 380 x 254 mm). Gothic letter (with roman and italic), text in two columns. First word of volume 1 title is xylographic, both titles within historiated woodcut border (McKerrow & Ferguson 120), two folding woodcuts, numerous large woodcut text illustrations, woodcut initials (including a 19-line historiated initial of Elizabeth I), woodcut head- and tailpieces; the very large folding woodcut creased and separated at some folds, 2 woodcuts shaved, a few small rustholes, occasional marginal tears and chips very infrequently affecting shoulder-notes, some inner margins wormed, a few original flaws in the paper repaired. Seventeenth-century calf with Dysart arms in gilt on each cover, small ornaments on spine, early manuscript paper spine labels, red edges, titled on fore-edges; extremities quite rubbed, vol. 2 joints cracked but secure.
