EUSEBIUS CAESARIENSIS (EUSEBIUS PAMPHILI). Historia ecclesiastica. Mantua (Johannes Schallus) 1479. Folio (310x198 mm.). 172 leaves (including last blank, all). 34 lines. Not rubricated. Later (17th century) vellum, gilt borders, gilt decoration on middle of covers, gilt spine in five compartments, nearly untrimmed. First leaf with paperloss in lower outer corner and some tears in lower margin, a few other small marginal tears. Minor foxing. Some near contemporary marginal annotations. GKW 9437; HC 6711; Collijn: Stockholm 399; Collijn: Uppsala 535 . Translated into Latin by Rufinus Tyrannus. 4th incunabula edition. Eusebius of Caesarea (AD 260/265 - 339/340), also known as Eusebius Pamphili, was a Greek historian of Christianity, exegete, and Christian polemicist. He became the bishop of Caesarea Maritima about 314 AD. Together with Saint Pamphilus of Caesarea (latter half of the 3rd century - 309), he was a scholar of the Biblical canon and is regarded as an extremely welllearned Christian of his time. He wrote Demonstrations of the Gospel, Preparations for the Gospel, and On Discrepancies between the Gospels, studies of the Biblical text. As "Father of Church History" he produced the Ecclesiastical History, On the Life of Pamphilus, the Chronicle and On the Martyr. (Wikipedia).
