Ernst Stuven devoted himself largely to painting still lifes. He was born in Hamburg, where he also received his initial art education, led by painter Georg Hainz Subsequently, he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a student of Johannes Voorhout and later joined the workshop of Willem van Aelst and ultimately that of Abraham Mignon He also spent some time in Rotterdam. The painting depicts a gold tray of fruit, such as grapes with foliage, an apple, and finely colored peaches.
