Printed text on verso ("Carte Postale Ce côté est exclusivement réserveé à l'adresse"). Very clean, fresh condition. A HEROIC IMAGE OF DREYFUS AFTER HIS VINDICATION, a three-quarter, bust image in full dress uniform, the Legion of Honor pinned proudly to his breast. There are two particularly arresting photos of Alfred Dreyfus, "before and after." The "before" is a mug shot taken just after his public degradation ceremony in 1895 that saw his epaulets ripped from his shoulders, his buttons torn off his tunic, his sword broken and cast into the dirt at his feet. Then the "after" image - this one - of a dignified, vindicated Dreyfus, his rank restored and the Legion of Honor pinned to his tunic. In between lay a horror story of injustice, official lying, wrongful imprisonment, anti-Semitism, and a public battle that tore France apart. Arrested and accused of espionage in 1894, Dreyfus was tried in secret, convicted on perjured testimony and mistaken handwriting analysis, and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island. After his incarceration, French authorities intercepted additional correspondence, in the same hand and to the same recipient as the documents supposedly by Dreyfus. Confronted with evidence of his innocence, they lied and tried to cover up, preferring to let Dreyfus die in captivity rather than admit a gross miscarriage of justice. Only the determined protests of Dreyfusards like Emile Zola Georges Clemenceau, Bernard Lazare and Leon Blum forced a re-trial in 1899. Convicted--incredibly--yet again, the president pardoned him within days. Dreyfus fought on for full vindication, which he finally achieved in July 1906.
