EXCEPTIONALLY RARE DOCUMENT SIGNED BY THE FIRST GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA. Gaspar de Portola is generally considered to be among the first Europeans to see what is now known as the San Francisco Bay. The Catalonia-born soldier served as the first Governor of the Californias when he was appointed to lead the 1769 "sacred expedition" into Alta California in order to claim the land. The expedition consisted of two components: three ships that left from the port at La Paz on the Baja Peninsula and two parties that were to make an overland journey. Portola, who was accompanied by the Franciscan Father Junipero Serra was part of the overland party. They established a base in San Diego before they journeyed northward to Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and eventually reached the Salinas River, which they followed to its mouth at first mistaking it for Monterey, their intended destination. They continued the journey after realizing their error and found the San Francisco Bay, completely missing Monterey. As winter was approaching they returned to San Diego to regroup until more favorable weather. The second expedition left by sea on April 16, 1770, and by land, again with Portola, the following day. They made it to Monterrey on May 24 where they established the beginnings of the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo and the foundation of the Presidio of Monterey. The expedition complete, Portola sailed from Monterey Bay to San Blas on July 9th of that year. Portola later was appointed the governor of Puebla in 1776, and, in 1784, returned to Spain. The present document dates during Portola's time as governor of Puebla and concerns the alleged murder of a man named Grimaldi by Jose Fernandez Chacon (alias Casares) in "Pueblo de las Amilpas." Rare Book Hub shows only a single record for a Gaspar Portola-signed item since 1924.
