cover 1899 XU5 (opened out for display with "MAFEKING CLUB" imprint on flap and endorsed "Oct. 18 : all right" ) to Ireland, smuggled out of Mafeking to Kuruman (which was also besieged 13-19 Nov. and 5 Dec.-1 Jan.) where a Cape 1d. was applied and cancelled by its c.d.s. (25.10), but due to lack of communication and the Kuruman Siege the cover must have been sent back to Mafeking where it was only forwarded on to Ireland (5.8.00 arrival) after the siege was lifted. One other similar cover is known endorsed by Dr. Hayes of Mafeking and sent out of Mafeking by runner. A fascinating postal history item touching two towns besieged by the Boers. Photo.
