Courbet writes to Monet , sending the younger artist 75 francs, regretting that he will not be able to send more before that evening 'parcequ'il faudroit que je change un billet de mille et c'est difficile dans mon quartier'. An indication of the young Claude Monet's admiration for Courbet is provided by his inclusion of a portrait of the older artist in his version of Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (1865-6).
