Civil War-related Silver-plated Urn, America, late 19th/early 20th century, the urn with engraved presentation "Taken from the residence of COMMODORE FORREST/CLAREMONT [sic] VA./on the retreat from the first Battle of Bull Run/July 22nd 1861/and presented to FRED A. NORCROSS by his UNCLE GEORGE/as a wedding present June 1900.," (wear to silver, feet bent), ht. 13 1/2 in. Note: Commodore French Forrest was head of the Washington Navy Yard, though during the Civil War he resigned his commission with the United States Navy and offered his services to Confederate Virginia. His residence, a large plantation known as Clermont, was confiscated by the Union Army and used as a small pox hospital; it was later burned to prevent the further spread of the disease.
