CIVIL WAR]. DOUBLEDAY, ABNER, General . Autograph letter signed to James Beale, New York, 26 January 1879, 4 pages, 8vo, tipped to a larger sheet . ON THE FIRST DAY'S BATTLE AT GETTYSBURG: "...Meade, who, personally a brave man, was always timid as a general, had determined to fall back to Pipe Creek and fortify there. The order did not reach Howard until about 12 noon or 1 p.m. on the first and he then did not attempt to carry it out though he might have done so. I don't believe Meade ever said that if the enemy got Gettysburg he was lost, for he had already given orders for his whole army to get behind Pipe Creek & that was 12 miles in rear of Gettysburg...Had we fallen behind Pipe Creek, the enemy would have confronted us with one Corps and have taken Harrisburg & Phil. with the other two..." -- DAVIS, JEFFERSON, President, C.S.A. Autograph quotation signed, Beauvoir, Mississippi, 20 April 1883. Oblong 4to, in purple ink, mounted on another sheet . An unusual sentiment: "Blessed be the hand that prepares a pleasure for a child, for there is no saying when and where it may bloom forth." -- MEADE, GEORGE, General . Autograph letter signed to Henry Coppe, Headquarters, Army of the Potomac, 13 October 1865. 1 page, 8vo, tipped to another sheet . Note forwarding Meade's hand-drawn plan of the Battle (not present), requested by Coppe. -- DOUBLEDAY. Cabinet photograph inscribed and signed with name and rank, n.p., n.d. [ca.1865] -- DANA, CHARLES A., Journalist, Union agent Cabinet photograph inscribed and signed, n.p., n.d., "C.A. Dana Cold Harbor, June, 1864." -- SHERIDAN, PHILIP HENRY, "Little Phil." Autograph letter signed to Capt. Henry Coppe, New Orleans, 21 August 1865. 3 pages with integral address, 8vo, tipped to another sheet . Coppe wrote on military subjects and his forwarded battle maps: "In the field of Five Forks the enemy's Cavalry is not represented as it did not apparently participate in the engagement. It was some place to the right and rear of his line of battle...." -- SUMNER, CHARLES, Politician . Autograph letter signed, Washington, D.C., 21 May 1863, 1 page, 8vo, tipped to another sheet , "Push yr. Leagues. Let good men unite, & cultivate hope & confidence. I am prepared for reverse & disaster but am sure that the good cause will triumph & the Republic be saved." Together six items . (8)
