Beschreibung:

89 signatures (some duplicates). Assembled by Captain William W. Beckwith, 80th NY, while serving on the staff of Provost General Marsena Patrick. In this capacity Beckwith had access to thousands of official documents, and apparently had grand dreams of collecting the autographs of each general officer in the Army of the Potomac. Laid out by Corps, Division, and Brigade, the autographs (mostly clipped signatures) are pasted onto the pages of the album, and while the goal may not quite have been achieved, the results are nonetheless impressive, with at least 89 signatures representing a total of 64 officers. Represented among these are some of the best known officers in the Union Army, Cavalry, and Artillery service, including the abolitionist firebrand David B. Birney (2 copies), the flamboyant George Armstrong Custer, Abner Doubleday, John W. Geary, Winfield Scott Hancock (2), Joseph Hooker, Oliver Otis Howard (2), Judson Kilpatrick, Wesley Merritt, Alfred Pleasanton, John Reynolds, Carl Schurz, John Sedgwick (3), Daniel Sickles, A.T.A. Torbert, and Horatio G. Wright, but also less well known figures from Darius Couch and Baron Adolph von Steinwehr to Romeyn Ayres and Henry Baxter. Perhaps the most choice autograph of all is that of Thaddeus S. C. Lowe, commander of the Balloon Corps of the Army of the Potomac, who signed himself "T.S.C. Lowe, Aeronaut." Among the signatures are 14 men who attained the rank of Major General and at least five (Hays, Reynolds, Russell, Sedgwick, and Wadsworth) who were reported killed in action. Clipped signatures, most rather closely trimmed, nearly all with indication of rank suggesting they were removed from war-date documents. Album bound in characteristic full leather with appropriate evidence of age, some wear and age toning, and some staining from the glue used to adhere the autographs. One page damaged when an autograph was removed, and for reasons unclear, at least two autographs were stricken through. Eighteen clipped signatures are laid into the album, having never been affixed. A scarce and unusually extensive collection reflecting the late 19th century passion for autograph collecting and the history of the Civil War. A fine album. Provenance: Descended in the Family of Captain William W. Beckwith, 80th NY
