Complaining about not receiving any letters, and stating that he writes every other day. Bosworth, {Squire Newton) “Newt.”(1841-1922) Point Lookout, Nov 15 1864. 1p (5 x 8 in.) To his father. Mostly things he needs, such as shoes, a shirt, drawers, etc. “I rec’d your kind letter yesterday & was glad to receive the stamps & money, as I will now be enabled to have a blanket to sleep on…. I would like to get out of this prison, but will bear it patiently.” With cover. Banks, Albert A. Elmira Prison, 1 Feb. 1865. 1p, (5 x 8 in.) to Rev. Edwin G. Booth. “The prisoners here are doing very well, getting [plenty] to eat and well treated but the constraint of Prison life is of course galling I trust that ‘ere long our difficulties will be terminated by Peace…Your obliged humble svt. / Albert A Banks. Booth, Esq. 1p, (4.75 x 8 in.) “On account of the favours that you have already extended to me I dislike very much to trouble you again, but I am again in need of a small sum, and as I see no prospect of an exchange of prisoners soon, I will be under many obligations to you if you will send me ten dollars by mail…” With cover. Edwin Gilliam Booth (1810-1886). Born in Nottoway County, VA, he attended Wingfield Academy, then Oxford, NC. He then entered the University of North Carolina, graduating at 18-years-of-age. He studied law and headed the largest law firm in that part of the state, serving a two-year term in the Virginia legislature and on the committee to revise Virginia’s laws. During the war he tried to offer relief to Confederate soldiers who were prisoners of war, as these letters demonstrate. Condition: Most good, having been protected by covers. The Banks letter with some insect damage, especially to the word "plenty."
